Re: Penalty Taking
Not sure what the rules are now. Am pretty sure it does stay you can’t stop before kicking the ball ; which does make a mockery of the hop / skip and jump approach we see or even the slow stuttered run.

Players tend to wait for the keeper to move and I thought there was a chance jn the final that you would get to a point where the goalie just stands still and the penalty taker also ends up standing still waiting. Could end up waiting for 10 minutes. A bit like the boxer face offs! First one to blink etc.

Rashfords technique has worked before but he took far too long. Am one stage I wondered if he hadn’t heard the refs whistle.

Re: Penalty Taking
Didn't Di Canio try to outsmart David James once by attempting to chip it straight down the middle, only for James to have read him and stood there taking the simplest of catches?

Pretty sure it was a last minute one which cost us a draw or possibly a win.

Just fucking wallop the ball. It's not rocket science.

Rocket is quite appropriate, given the height that Chris Waddle's walloped penalty reached in Italia 90.

Paolo Di Canio placed all of his and hardly ever missed, including a dinked one down the middle in front of the Kop!

Re: Penalty Taking
I know noble out one wide against Spurs, I think he missed against Chelsea one season (had it saved) and there was a game against Burnley (I think) a couple of years ago where it was saved and he scored the rebound

Can’t think of the 4th one though

Re: Penalty Taking
Back in the day the laws stated that the run up for a penalty had to be consistent. I did my refs exam in 95 I think and one of the tutors (the ref from Hillsborough) went through it and talked about the John Aldridge dummy etc

I think when that was the ruling it made it much clearer that belting the ball was the best way. Too many players try to be too clever and mess up. I said to my mates when Italy won their semi that I couldnt believe keepers still fell for jorginho’s stutter/dummy - stay put and he can’t get enough power on the ball to beat you even if it’s in the corner. That’s what Pickford did

I do also find it weird how there aren’t replays from the side on sancho or sakas penalties. Such a big deal was made of mbappe missing and var checking if the keeper had one foot on the line, yet they never seemed to check agaib

Oh I don't know. I took one at Upton Park for a WHO eleven 10 odd years ago and knew I'd probably be hung and left dangling from a hanger in the changing room if I'd missed!

Maguire’s effort the other night is for me the ideal pen. Bosh into the top corner. Nobody’s getting their fingertips to that, or even a 10ft tall Italian.

Re: Penalty Taking
Westside let's face it none of us will ever know how it feels to.have that much pressure on you in that scenario.

No-one doing it deserves a "cunting off' if they miss, just praise for having the nerve to do.it in the first place, IMHO.

Re: Penalty Taking
When talking about the likes of Dicks, Stewart, Shearer Noble, Le Tissier, these are all a team's first choice penalty takers. In a shoot out, you are only likely to have 2 or 3 first choice takers.

Goal keepers are better researched these days. The rate of penalty saves in the Premier League, for example, has increased over the years. 1st season two out of 61 saved (and two missed the target). Season just gone 12 out 124 saved and another 10 missed. the rate at which penalties are saved has gone for just over 3% to 10%, a 3 fold increase in the number of saves.

Not that I like the "stuttering run" but for those advocating a head down and belt it approach, that didn't serve Waddle and Pearce very well at Italia 90. I can remember Beckham smashing one over the bar, in a shoot out too.

Kaiser yes that is the one I.mentioned originally, can't remember him missing another can you?

Re: Penalty Taking
Exactly.

And to reference Fifth's question below. It's absolutely down to data available to goalkeepers, and probably a shift toward better athleticism in general as well from better and more thorough training etc. Lots of things to tip the odds ever so slightly more in their favour. It all puts extra pressure on the players taking the penalties and leads to more saves and misses.

Woodford Green 3:36 Wed Jul 14
Re: Penalty Taking
Shearer used to go to low and to the left 9 times out of ten but he hardly missed any.

I remember Bosnich who had an amazing penalty save record for a couple of seasons (something like 70%) said he kept a book recording the placement for each taker in the league.

Now you've got all sorts of stats business who supply the clubs with that sort of data.

nychammer 3:35 Wed Jul 14
Re: Penalty Taking
Fuck around stuttering your run up, tap the ball or miss the target and you’re fair game to be cunted off

Agreed - Rashford looked like he was auditioning for Riverdance. Never going to score like that.

zico 3:33 Wed Jul 14
Re: Penalty Taking
Keepers can suss a taker out and have always been able to do that to an extent. Gordon Banks for instance knew Hurst was going to put his to Banks right in the League Cup Semi Final and guessed right, but because Hurst hit it brilliantly it goes down in history as a great save rather than a miss. As many have said below just blast it into a corner high or low. If the keeper saves it it's a great save, pfaff around with the run up it's remembered as a miss.

Kaiser Zoso 3:33 Wed Jul 14
Re: Penalty Taking
I remember Julian missing one against The Goon, when he was concussed, apparently. We pissed all over them and still lost 0-1.

I ddn't realise Noble's record was as bad as those stats. The only pen I remember him missing was v Spurs at the Boleyn.
